Do You Review Your Electric Bill?
Have you ever stopped to think how much electricity you’re using every month? If you’re like most of us, you briefly scan your electric bill when it comes in the mail, and pay the bill as long as it isn’t abnormally high. But have you ever taken the time to consider what your neighbors are paying every month for their electric bill, or how much electricity is used on average in neighboring states or other countries.
Average Energy Consumption in the U.S.
The EIA- also known as the U.S. Energy Administration– reports that Americans use an average amount of 909 kilowatt hours of electricity per month. This translates into an average of $110 per U.S. household each month.
Because electrical costs vary by state, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the states using the most electricity pay the highest bill. Factors influencing these costs include the temperature (as well as the fluctuation in temperature) of your state, and whether your home is in a rural or urban community. For example, the citizens of Louisiana use the most electricity every month (1,273 kWh), but the average cost per home is less than that of Hawaii, which uses the second least amount of electricity every month ($203 per month). Additionally, Maine uses the least amount of electricity in all 50 states- coming in at 573 kWh- but pays more on their electric bill than New Mexico, which uses more electricity than Maine.

U.S Energy Compared to Other Countries
When compared to other industrialized countries in the world, the U.S. consumes the second largest amount of electricity every year. The average American home uses more than 11,968 kWH of electricity each year. This figure is upwards of 300% more than the average amount of energy used by most European countries, and and more than 20 times that of the average home in Nigeria.
Even more staggering, the average American uses around 4,500 kWh yearly, and compared to the average amount of everyone who uses electricity over the world, 4,500 kWh is five times that figure. To be fair, some of these differences are due to the size of the home, prices of electricity in your community, amount of appliances, and availability of alternative energy sources, but it still clear that Americans use much more electricity than almost all other industrialized nations.
